On this day:
Lads defeat Newcastle to reach play-off final

On this day in 1990, Sunderland advanced to Wembley as they saw off the challenge of rivals Newcastle United in the play-offs.

Goals from Eric Gates and Marco Gabbiadini sealed a 2-0 win at St James’ Park in the play-off second leg, a result which was enough to send the lads through to Wembley.

While the Black Cats did fall short at the national stadium a few weeks later – losing 1-0 to Swindon Town – the lads did gain promotion as it was rule the Robins had incurred 36 breaches of league rules.

Sunderland were subsequently promoted in their place.

Also on this day in 1908, Charles Bellany Thomson signed from Heart of Midlothian. He went on to captain the lads to the League Championship in 1913 as well as the FA Cup final
