On this day: Title celebrations at the SoL

On this day in 2005, Sunderland were presented with the Championship trophy following a dominant season in England’s second tier.

After missing out on promotion via the play-offs in 2004, the Lads responded in emphatic fashion by winning 29 of their 46 league games.

Mick McCarthy’s men topped the table by seven points ahead of second-placed Wigan Athletic, as Marcus Stewart finished top scorer on 17.

The Lads clinched a 1-0 win against Stoke City on this day to end the season on a high, with Gary Breen lifting the Championship trophy aloft at the Stadium of Light following the full-time whistle.

Also on this day: On this day in 1955, Sunderland started a post-season tour of America with a 7-2 win over an American League Stars team at Ebbets Field, Brooklyn.
