On this day:
Phillips emulates Clough

On this day in 1998, Sunderland maintained their hopes of automatic promotion with a 3-0 win over Stoke City at the Stadium of Light.

And like many games that season, Kevin Phillips provided the standout moment as the striker reached a memorable milestone.

Darren Williams was also on the scoresheet, but Phillips was at the double as he reached the 30-goal mark in style.

The striker latched onto a long ball over the top and sent a stunning volley beyond Neville Southall, as he became the first Sunderland player to reach 30 goals since Brian Clough in 1962.

A defeat against Ipswich Town followed, though, and the Lads were beaten to automatic promotion before losing an epic play-off final on penalties after 120 minutes of action ended 4-4 against Charlton Athletic.

But they’d provide the perfect response the following campaign, with a top-flight return confirmed thanks to a record-breaking 105 points that handed the Lads the title, during which Phillips bagged another 25 goals in red and white.

Also on this day: Wilf Rostron struck a hat-trick to help Sunderland to a 6-2 win over Sheffield Wednesday, as the Lads moved top of Division Two on goal difference.
