Foundation of Light: Would you like to study for a scholarship while representing SAFC?

A unique scholarship programme which combines representing Sunderland AFC with studying for nationally recognised qualifications is now recruiting for the new season.

Information evenings will be held throughout March for Foundation of Light's Football Scholarship programme where promising players aged 16-18 can find out how they can continue their development both on the pitch and in the classroom.

The events will take place at SAFC's Stadium of Light and Dean Street, home of Shildon AFC, where the Scholarship coaching and education team will talk in depth about the football and academic sides of the programme.

Martin Jones, Foundation Scholarship Manager, said: "The open evenings are a fantastic opportunity for players to come along and learn more about the programme, get to know our coaches and staff and find out if the Scholarship will suitable for them.

"Working with our UEFA A and UEFA B qualified coaches and education specialists, players have the opportunity to be recruited by professional and semi-professional football clubs; go on to higher education at home or abroad as well as pursue careers in coaching, sports science, sports journalism or physiotherapy."

Launched in 2016, the programme has been a huge success with the Sunderland and Shildon teams taking the FA Under 19 Development League by storm with each scholar on target to reach their academic goals.

Students study towards a full-time BTEC Level 2 or Level 3 National Diploma in Sport Performance and Excellence under the expert guidance of the Foundation's Further Education Officers.

In addition to progressing academically, the scholars also compete against other Premier League and English Football League (EFL) development teams representing Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Crystal Palace and Burnley to name a few.

Using footage recorded by SportsByte at the University of Sunderland, students will have the opportunity to watch back each fixture for detailed analysis as well as gaining access to nutrition advice and strength and conditioning training with Unique Performance Coaching.

This season, players from both sites have also been selected to represent Sunderland AFC's Academy, Ebac Northern League sides such as Shildon AFC, Seaham Red Star, Brandon United and Tow Law, as well as trialling for England Schools and professional clubs.
