Red and white all over:
History of the stripes

To celebrate the launch of the 2017-18 adidas home kit, Sunderland AFC handed over the spotlight to local players and supporters in a special game broadcast live on Facebook at Ashbrooke Cricket Club – of one SAFC’s former homes.

In another nod to the Black Cats’ history, the new kit has its roots steeped in shirts from the 1880s - featuring narrower stripes as worn during the historic era.

Sunderland’s first striped kit dates back to 1887 and only once since adopting the stripes have they strayed away from the norm; back in the early 1980s French designers Le Coq Sportif introduced a radical new look for the Lads, a predominantly white shirt with red pinstripes, a move that didn’t prove too popular with fans.

Since then the Black Cats have remained faithful to the traditional stripe, even through shirt sponsor changes and the club’s transition to the Stadium of Light back in 1997, where a new club badge was introduced.
