Preview: Under-18s host Manchester City

Sunderland AFC Under-18s are back in league action this Saturday with Manchester City the visitors at the Academy of Light (11am).

Opposition

Manchester City are currently second in the U18 Premier League, sitting 10 points behind leaders Manchester United.

The Citizens have won 12, drawn one and lost three from their opening 16 fixtures, including a 4-1 victory over their Manchester rivals last weekend.

The Blues are now unbeaten in nine.

Ben Wilkinson took charge as Lead Coach in the summer of 2021 overseeing the Premier League Cup victory in 2022.

 

Under Wilkinson’s leadership, City became the first Under-18 team to win three consecutive Premier League north and national titles. 

 

The 36-year-old called time on his playing career in 2013 after spells with Hull City, York City and Boston United.

 

The former midfielder started his coaching journey with Sheffield Wednesday and went on to join Manchester City in 2018 after five years at Hillsborough

Manchester United are the current league leaders with just one defeat all season.

Manchester City, Liverpool and Derby County make-up the top four. 

The last time the Black Cats faced City was in December 2023 where goals from Ben Creamer, Chris Rigg and Trey Ogunuyi sealed a 3-1 victory.
