Interview: Jordan Moore reflects on the U18s progression

Sunderland AFC Under-18s ended last weekend's league fixture with an average age squad of 15 and lead coach Jordan Moore has described them as a "hardworking group with a plethora of talent."

Despite a 2-0 defeat to Everton at the Academy of Light, the young Black Cats side were able to introduce every U16 player onto the pitch and 14-year-old Henry in at centre back for the last 10 minutes.

"It is a really proud achievement for the Lads and the AoL", Jordan said.

"We had a lot of our regular U18 players travel to Reading with the U21s which is a brilliant progression in itself but that then allowed us to showcase some of our younger talent."

Moore's side returned to league action following the exit from the FA Youth Cup. Despite convincing victories against Middlesbrough and Gillingham, Swindon Town progressed with a 2-1 win at the Stadium of Light.

"Naturally, the Lads were disappointed but the experience they gained from playing at the SoL and the Priestfield will stay with them for a long time.

"The focus now is moving players up the age groups. You can see that from our game against Everton.

"We were really pleased with the performance, collectively and individually they were brilliant. We were over the moon to start the game with five U16s on the pitch and end the game with even some U15s on the pitch."

Leeds United are next up in the U18 Premier League and Jordan explained how they get their younger Lads ready for the big fixtures:

"This is all a part of their training programme. They've trained well and developed their personal objectives, they now get the opportunity to go out and express what we work on every day."
