U21 Preview: PL Cup group action at Wolves

SAFC U21s are back on the road on Monday, looking to respond to defeat last time out with a trip to face Wolverhampton Wanderers (KO 2pm) in the Premier League Cup group stage.

The contest will take place at New Bucks Head, home of AFC Telford United, and represents the second of six group fixtures in the PL Cup – now being played weekly during the World Cup break as Premier League 2 action takes a back seat until the New Year.

The young Lads were beaten 3-1 by Southampton in our previous outing at the Academy of Light last Monday, despite a much-improved second half performance. A younger side is expected to travel which may not include first-team squad members as Tony Mowbray’s senior professionals prepare to travel to Dubai for a mid-season training camp, and Bailey Wright and Jewison Bennette head to Qatar with their respective national teams for the World Cup finals.

Graeme Murty’s side have so far played a sole group match in the PL Cup, going down 3-1 to Reading at Eppleton last month. Wolves faced the current group table-toppers on Friday afternoon in their own opening group game, winning 2-1 to get off to a victorious start. Cardiff City are the fourth club to make up Group H in this season’s competition.

Social media coverage of the contest from New Bucks Head will be active on our dedicated Academy Twitter page, @AcademyOfLight.
