View from the dugout: Hewitson on Villa test

SAFC Under-21s will stand up to the test posed by Aston Villa on Monday evening at Eppleton CW (KO 7pm), according to interim coach John Hewitson.

The club’s Under-18 lead is continuing to oversee the Development Squad after taking charge of their trip to Canada, which coincided with the Under-21s’ opening fixture of the season against Norwich City.

Following a positive display by a youthful side against the Canaries, reinforcements have arrived in the form of those returning from North America and a batch of new signings.

Villa started the season with a 3-3 draw against Middlesbrough and Hewitson is expecting a tough game, but he is excited by the prospect of fielding a full-strength side at Eppleton CW.

“Our young side really stood up to the test in challenging circumstances at Norwich City, so Monday night’s game is an exciting one due to us now having everyone available for selection.

“We can call upon the players that performed admirably at Norwich, those that travelled to Canada and some new signings, which means we have great competition for places.”

He continued: “From previous seasons, we once again expect Aston Villa to be one of the top teams in the league this year.

“It will be a tough game because they have some really talented individuals, but they will also be very organised in and out of possession

“It’s a test we are all looking forward to and one that we believe we can stand up to, so it’s up to the players to do that and hopefully it will lead to a positive result.”
