Match report: Sunderland U23s 3-1 Norwich City U23s

Mitchell Curry scored twice as Sunderland Under-23s continued their strong start to the season with a 3-1 win over Norwich City on Monday.

First-half strikes from Curry and Patrick Almond put the Lads ahead at the break, but Thomas Dickson-Peters pulled one back after the interval.

The Black Cats soon had their two-goal cushion back though, when Mitch Curry slotted home 20 minutes from time to seal their fifth Premier League 2 win of the season.

Elliott Dickman named Morgan Feeney in his starting XI, as the centre-back continued his recovery from injury.

While top goalscorer Mitchell Curry led the line, with support from Josh Hawkes and Stephen Wearne.

Sunderland started on the front foot at the Academy of Light and created their first chance less than 10 minutes in when Cieran Dunne found Jake Hackett unmarked, but his effort was blocked.

But moments later, the Lads went ahead when Curry grabbed his sixth Premier League 2 goal of the season, slotting home a cross from Hawkes.

The Black Cats continued to play on the front foot and went inches close to a second when Dunne flashed wide from Stephen Wearne’s pull back.

And on the stroke of half time, they had a two-goal advantage, as Hawkes’ shot from the edge of the area deflected off Almond and spun into the net.

The two-goal advantage was halved ten minutes after the break though, when Dickson-Peters powered home a header.

But the Lads quickly reasserted their dominance on the game once again when Curry rounded the ‘keeper and slotted home his second to secure the win.

The result leaves the Under-23s sixth in the table, with 15 points from 10 games.
