New additions: Under-23 trio sign up

Sunderland AFC are pleased to confirm the signings of Sam Wilding, Bobby Beaumont and Vinnie Steels.

The trio will link up with Elliott Dickman’s under-23 squad for the upcoming campaign after penning respective one-year deals on Wearside.

Wilding, a central midfielder, completed a successful trial with the Black Cats at the end of last season after previously representing West Bromwich Albion and spending time on loan with National League side Leamington FC.

Defender Beaumont joins from Wrexham AFC and boasts first-team experience despite only being 18, while he also captained the Welsh Schools’ FA at youth level.

Steels, meanwhile, re-joins the club after time away with Darlington, York City and most recently Premier League side Burnley.

Speaking about the new arrivals, Under-23 head coach Elliott Dickman said: “We had the lads in training before lockdown so we’re fully aware of their capabilities, but it’s nice to add some new faces to the group. Bobby is a good character and he’s willing to learn. He can also play anywhere along the backline, so that’s a big plus for us.”

“We had Sam on trial last season and he was really keen to join us. He’s a defensive midfielder that loves to break up play and he’s technically very good. Vinnie was with us when he was younger and he’s had a bit of a journey playing men’s football at a young age. He’s a quick, direct winger and we’re really looking forward to working with him. They are all welcome additions to the squad ahead of what we hope will be a successful season.”
