U18s: Youth team defeated on home soil

Sunderland U18 2-5 Blackburn Rovers U18

Sunderland under-18s’ wait for their first league win of the season went on as Blackburn Rovers defeated them on Saturday.

Cole Kiernan had handed the Black Cats the advantage after 37 minutes, but Samuel Durrant and Jake Garrett struck twice in four minutes to ensure Rovers led at the break.

Sam Burns extended the visitors’ lead on Wearside early in the second period before Kiernan bagged his second to get Sunderland back in it.

But Paul Bryson’s side were unable to capitalise further and as a result Jared Horlock punished them as he put away a fourth in the 67th minute.

Durrant then sealed Rovers’ scoring spree in stoppage time as he tucked his penalty past stopper Adam Cameron.
