Elliott Dickman praised the endeavours of his players after they overcame Hertha Berlin at the Stadium of Light tonight.
Sunderland under-23s got their Premier League International Cup campaign off to the perfect start with two goals and a clean sheet.
Paddy McNair marked his return to action with a goal on 37 minutes before Tom Beadling wrapped up victory with the last kick of the match from the penalty spot.
Speaking to safc.com post-match, Dickman shared his thoughts on the display.
"It was a tough game and I don't think it was a game for the purist." he said.
"To be fair to the players they have worked hard, made it competitive and we have got a clean sheet which is always nice.
"We have won the game 2-0 so it is a good start to the group.
"There are always people who want to have a pop at academy football and say it is all this tippy tappy football," he continued.
"But tonight has shown that our lads can do the other side of the game.
"We want them to do it on more of a regular basis. It is great for me that they have shown a bit of desire, some grit and determination.
"They have worked really, really hard and made blocks so we are really, really pleased with the determination, doggedness and grittiness they have showed."
