Sunderland under-12s visited Mere Knolls cemetery on Thursday morning as part of their remembrance commemorations.
The young Black Cats squad have been studying about the Great War of Passchendaele, that took place 100 years ago, and as part of their commemorations they laid a wreath at the grave of Nicholson Webster, who fought in Belgium.
Following the lads’ visit to the cemetery, first-team faces George Honeyman, Duncan Watmore and Jason Steele dropped in to find out more about the projects the under-12s have been doing.
And speaking about the visit, head of education and welfare at the Academy of Light, Don Peattie said: “It is 100 years since the Great War of Passchendaele so the Premier League have invited clubs to undergo a project with their under-12 group.
“The basic idea is to research a bit about servicemen who came from Sunderland, fought at Passchendaele and then came back to the city.
“The lads have worked very diligently to do some work on the servicemen as well as the Great War of Passchendaele.”
He continued: “Education is really important and when they get to study something of this magnitude it really opens their eyes.
“I have been really impressed about how they have taken to this task and it is has been awe inspiring for them.”
