U18s Report: Leicester City 1-1 Sunderland

Leicester City U18s 1-1 Sunderland U18s

A last minute goal by Leicester City gave them the draw against Sunderland at Aylestone on Saturday in the Premier League.

It had looked as though a second-half goal by the Black Cats’ leading scorer Lee Connelly would be enough to give the visitors the win but disaster struck for Sunderland when, in time added on, City's Thakgalo Leshabela grabbed a point for the East Midlanders.

In the first-half City were the better side, Michael Woud has to be on guard time after time in the Sunderland goal to pull off several superb saves.

But it was still goalless at half-time when Sunderland regrouped to come back well into the game…

Their efforts were rewarded when they took the lead in the 59th minute. Owen Gamble played a great through ball to split open the defence, and Connelly did the rest by pouncing on the ball in a flash to clinically drive home beyond the keeper.

Mark Atkinson’s side now had to dig in and fight for the victory that looked theirs until time added on when disaster struck.

A bouncing ball in midfield was won by the hosts and played on to City's Leshabela who cut in and curled the equaliser past a forlorn Woud in the Sunderland goal.

Speaking post-match Atkinson said: "It would have been an ugly win as we had to defend and compete which we did so well and it is very disappointing just not to have held on for the win."

Sunderland: Woud, Storey, Taylor, Young, Krusnell, Gamble, Hackett, Kimpiola, Allan, Connelly.

Subs not used: Slack, Southern.
