On the march:
Brotherton ready for World Cup qualifiers

Sam Brotherton has set his sights on putting New Zealand two steps closer to next summer’s World Cup in Russia.

The Kiwis are undefeated are after two games, winning one and drawing the other against New Caledonia.

Currently top of Group A, which is made up of two other nations, Anthony Hudson’s men are now preparing to for a double-header against Fiji who are yet to play any games in round three of Oceania’s qualification process.

New Zealand are first in action on Saturday 25 March at Churchill Park, Fiji, before the return fixture sees them welcome Frank Farina’s side to Wellington.

Speaking to safc.com prior to making the 24,000 mile round trip to New Zealand, Brotherton shared his excitement about linking up with West Ham defender Winston Reid once again, as the Kiwis attempt to further strengthen their bid to reach next summer’s World Cup.

“Winston (Reid) and Tommy Smith are two players who have established themselves in England,” he said.

“There a lot of good senior players who have also made the move over here but for me it is great to be honest to get the chance to train alongside them.

“I always take little things from their game and obviously someday I really hope to follow in their footsteps.

“There is no one better to learn off and emulate,” he continued.

“We have two big games while I’m over there and we have started the group well but we know that can quickly change.

“Fiji will be another good test for us but we want to do everything we can to stay in the position we’re in.”
