Academy:
A year to remember for young Connelly

Lee Connelly catches up with safc.com while being back home in Scotland during the off-season.

The youngster pens his thought on a personally bright maiden campaign in English football, having netted 13 goals up top for Mark Atkinson’s youth team.

Lee, you seem to have settled well on Wearside following your move from Queens Park last summer, how has the first year gone from your side?

I have really enjoyed this season despite the frustrating results along the way. I have been getting used to the life of a professional footballer so I have had to make some changes. I've been disappointed with 13 goals but when I look back I realise I've not done too badly in my 1st season.

As a team the under-18s have had a challenging campaign. That said, they overcame that and ended the season on a real high. What changed?

It has been a hard season for us because we have always had injuries and that has ultimately affected us. Towards the end of the season most people were back fit and we had a real determination to show that we are a good team, I think we did that and we were happy with the results in the merit groups.

Attention quickly turns to next season and making sure you are prepared - what can you do over the summer to keep in shape?

I just want to work hard and show everyone I can become a professional footballer. Having a summer off is great for me as it gives me time to get fit and get in shape to come back looking forward and hungry to go again in pre-season.
