U18s: Atkinson bemoans costly mistakes

Mark Atkinson was left to rue an out of sorts second-half display from his side on Saturday as they surrendered their lead to Liverpool.

Lee Connelly handed Sunderland under-18s a first-half lead at Liverpool in the Premier League Cup, but sluggish play in the second 45 saw Steven Gerrard’s side roar back.

Facing Liverpool for the second time in eight days, the Black Cats were left once against ruing a late slip up as the hosts secured all three points with another late winner after coming from behind.

And speaking to safc.com, Atkinson cut a frustrated figure.

“The first-half was good because we had a good shape about us and looked a threat on the break,” he said.

“We went in at half-time winning 1-0 but the second 45 was frustrating.

“Our decision making, and game management was poor and that ultimately cost us in regard to getting anything out of the game.

“It is a massive learning curve for the players.

“I would say it was naivety and an inability to understand exactly what is needed to win games,” he continued.

“We want to progress in the FA Youth Cup next weekend, but we will work hard during the week to make sure we get the reaction we are after.”
