Ethan Robson got the lads on their way to victory with a penalty on six minutes before Tom Beadling found the net with a drilled free-kick in the second period.
Carl Finnigan halved the deficit with 73 minutes played but the Black Cats withstood the brunt of Shields' attack and restored their two-goal cushion through Owen Gamble.
