U18s:
Atkinson set for Wear-Tyne clash

Mark Atkinson is hoping rich competition for places will inspire his players in their season opener against Newcastle United on Saturday.

The youth team begin their U18 Premier League campaign this weekend, welcoming their Tyneside counterparts in a blockbuster game to kick-off the new season.

And following a strenuous seven-week pre-season campaign, Atkinson has told safc.com his players are in good condition and chomping at the bit to get started.

The under-18s boss also admitted no place is guaranteed as both first-year and second-year scholars battle to be in Saturday’s starting XI.

“It was a bit frustrating that we didn’t play our first competitive game last weekend so the lads are eager to get going now,” he said.

“It has been a long pre-season and with our first game being against Newcastle there is that little bit more spice as well.

“The performance last season were always pleasing but the defeats did knock confidence so this season it is important we perform and develop.

“Equally at this age, it is important the lads learn how to win games or how to not get beaten in games as well.

“There are first years who will be pushing the second years close for a starting place on Saturday,” he continued.

“That has been pleasing and from that point of view we have an idea what team will start on Saturday but that doesn’t mean to say that side will start each game.”
