Robson: U23s in a good place

Sunderland under-23s have enjoyed an undefeated start to the Premier League 2 this season, and Tommy Robson believes that is built on the spirit of last term’s achievements.

While Manchester United piped the young Black Cats at the final hurdle in May to be crowned champions, the young guns have dusted themselves down and begun the new campaign in scintillating fashion, winning three of their opening four league fixtures.

With Manchester City up next for Welsh’s team this Sunday, skipper Robson told safc.com the lads have simply picked up where they left off at the end of last season.

“It has been great because it is pretty much the same team,” he said. “We all know each other’s qualities and that has really helped us start this season like we performed throughout the last one.

“Our last game at Everton was a battle but we stuck together even though we didn’t play the best of football at times. We grafted and got ourselves through it and that has really helped us gel together.

“We worked hard and that is what we have got used to doing,” he continued.

“We stick together, we work hard and we put ourselves in good positions to grind results out.

“We all believe we can continue our unbeaten league start this weekend but we need to continue to play in the same manner as we have done in our first four games.”
