Club Treasures: Match holder

This unusual item dates from the late 1930s. It is a wall mounted holder for a box of matches and is autographed by Sunderland’s side of the thirties.

Headed ‘A match for anyone,’ an outline of a Sunderland player has a football for a face – reminiscent of the old ‘Football Echo man’

A dozen autographs on the wood mostly remain entirely legible. Signatures include goalkeeper Johnny Mapson, Alex Hastings, Alex Hall and Len Duns, the latter of whom you can find his 1937 FA Cup final shirt and winner’s medal on display in the Stadium of Light foyer.

Q. Where is it displayed?

A. Quinn’s Bar.
