This is the oldest item on display at the Stadium of Light.
This medal was won by Jacob Spain in 1887. The medal is kindly on loan courtesy of Alan Spain, the Great Nephew of Jacob Spain.
Sunderland beat Darlington 1-0 in the final of the Durham Challenge Cup on 26 March1887. Birtley, Gateshead and Whitburn had also been beaten during the cup run.
The following season Jacob Spain also played in the first ever Sunderland v Newcastle derby, as the Lads played Magpies’ forerunners Newcastle East End in an FA Cup third round qualifying game.
