SAFC Women: U23 update with five games to go

Sunderland Women Under-23’s have five games remaining as they continue their push for the title in their maiden season.

Beginning their journey in the seventh tier, the young Lasses have won 13 and drew two of their 15 league games this season – a remarkable feat.

Domonic Bylett’s side still have work to do in the hunt for promotion, starting with a game against Gateshead Leam Rangers Ladies on Sunday (KO 2pm).

The team’s closest league rivals, Consett Ladies, have also impressed this season, going unbeaten so far but with three draws and 12 wins, leaving them just two points behind Sunderland.

Consett have a tough game this weekend, hosting third-placed Birtley Town Ladies at home, with the two sides drawing 2-2 last time out.

As well as success in the league, the inclusion of Ebony Thompson, Rhiannon Mallaburn and Milly Cairns in the Women’s first-team squad in recent weeks is a positive that Head Coach Bylett frequently alludes to, showcasing the strength of the pathway.

Going into the business end of the season, full focus will be on securing the title and continuing the development of the squad, starting with the game at the Academy of Light on Sunday.
