Injury News: Alese and Gooch fitness update

Sunderland will monitor Aji Alese and Lynden Gooch throughout the week ahead of the weekend’s Championship tie against Burnley.

Alese limped off in the second half of the defeat to Blackburn Rovers whilst Gooch missed the game through a minor problem.

The Lads are hopeful of getting back to winning ways at the Stadium of Light whilst Tony Mowbray is hopeful of having his defensive duo available for the game.

“Aji looked in a lot of discomfort laying on that bed with a huge ice pack around his foot” said the head coach. “I’m hoping it’s just a kick, I think he might have twisted it as well in the challenge.

“He’s pretty upset about it to be honest, he thought it was a really bad tackle.

“We’ll have to see. If he needs a scan then we will have to get a scan tomorrow. It will need to settle down. He’ll come into work and we’ll see what the aftermath of it is.”

Gooch had previously started every league game this season before the trip to Ewood Park with the American playing a major role in the side.

Regarding Gooch’s latest fitness, Mowbray continued: “We’re hopeful it’s not too bad. He had a scan the other day but I haven’t seen the results.

“He was hobbling about anyway so there was no way he was coming here today. We’re hoping it’s only a bit of bruising and it’s not too severe.”
