Team News: Mowbray on Stewart, Gooch and Alese

Tony Mowbray has delivered the latest on the fitness of his squad, as Sunderland return to Sky Bet Championship action this Saturday against Millwall.

The Head Coach does not rule out Ross Stewart’s eagerly anticipated return coming this weekend at the Stadium of Light, albeit suggesting the risk may not be worth it just yet.

“Ross mixed it up a bit in Dubai’s training sessions between the team and individual training – today was his first full training session,”

“He came through it smiling and wanting to do extra shooting, which suggests he is ready to go, but we’ll discuss whether it’s worth the risk when we then have a nine-day gap before West Brom and we have other forward players in good goalscoring form.

“We’ll chat with Ross and discuss the best course of action after training on Friday.”

Mowbray then elaborated on the latest regarding Lynden Gooch and Aji Alese – who all fully trained and featured on the pitch in Dubai last week.

“Lynden and Aji are fine – the week’s training and the friendly match helped their progress.

“The pair of them are both back fit and training as normal which is a boost for us.

“Ellis Simms is also back 100%. He played and scored at Birmingham before the break, which set the tone for him to continue strongly.”
