Preview: Lads return to host Millwall

Sunderland return to Sky Bet Championship action after a three-week break in play this Saturday, taking on Millwall at the Stadium of Light (KO 12:30pm).

The fixture – rearranged from September due to the death of Queen Elizabeth II – provides ample opportunity for both sides, as it stands as the only Championship match to be scheduled this weekend.

Team news

Tony Mowbray delivered the latest squad fitness update on Thursday, and confirmed Ross Stewart could have an outside chance.

The Head Coach described the striker as ‘ready to go’ – but hinted he may not take the risk with Stewart possibly kept back until we face West Bromwich Albion next week.

Lynden Gooch and Aji Alese are also back in full contention having trained with the squad throughout the recent Dubai camp.

Dan Ballard remains sidelined and will not face his former club this weekend – Niall Huggins and Ellis Simms are available.

Opposition

Millwall have been in the Championship since promotion from League One in 2017, finishing in the top half during all but one of the subsequent seasons.

Manager Gary Rowett has been in place at The Den since October 2019, only Coventry City’s Mark Robins serving longer in post at a Championship club. The sixth-placed Lions will themselves be seeking three points on Wearside which would elevate them into fourth, following a 4-2 away win at Preston North End in their last outing – record signing Zian Flemming netting a hat-trick.

Among Millwall’s ranks this weekend is likely to be Sunderland Academy graduate George Honeyman, who arrived in South London from Hull City last summer. The 28-year-old has played 19 times in all competitions so far this season, scoring once.
