Loan switch: Sanderson signs for Sunderland

Sunderland AFC have completed the loan signing of Dion Sanderson.

The versatile defender, who can play on the right or in a central role, moves to Wearside from Wolverhampton Wanderers until the end of the 2020-21 season.

After making his first-team debut in an EFL Cup tie against Aston Villa in October 2019, the 20-year-old joined Cardiff City in January 2020 on a six-month loan deal.

During his time at the Cardiff City Stadium, Sanderson made 10 first-team appearances.

After moving to the Stadium of Light, the defender said: “It’s a massive club and I hope I can contribute to a successful campaign. I enjoyed my first-team experience with Cardiff City last season, and I believe this is the best opportunity for me to build on that. I can play right-back or centre-back – I just love defending and I love tackling. I can’t wait to get started.”

Manager Phil Parkinson added: “I’m pleased to welcome Dion to the club. He’s a young and athletic player who will add further competition to the squad."

Dion will link up with his new team-mates on Monday and will not be eligible to feature this weekend against Swindon Town.
