10 to go: Parkinson demands response

Phil Parkinson is determined to see a response on Saturday after he believed his side lacked ‘calmness and composure’ against Coventry.

Sunderland suffered only their second defeat in 2020 when they were narrowly beaten by the Sky Bet League One promotion hopefuls at St Andrew’s.

Matt Godden scored for a third successive home game, confidently slotting home inside two minutes to land the decisive blow.

The Black Cats did respond but were largely wasteful, as Tom Flanagan and Charlie Wyke miscued Chris Maguire crosses before Max Power’s deflected strike was ruled out for offside.

The Lads now face a clear week before facing Gillingham at the Stadium of Light on Saturday, a game which Parkinson is demanding a response in.

“I thought we gave our all but just lacked that little bit of composure at times in the heat of the battle,” he said.

“Some of our play and performances have been excellent, but on Sunday we weren’t quite on the ball as we have been.

“We have a very honest group of players and now it is about getting back to work this week and looking at things we can do better.

“We will regroup and make sure we are ready for these last 10 games,” he continued.

“We have a very honest group of players and now it is about getting back to work this week and looking at things we can do better.

“We have Gillingham up next and we must give it absolutely everything - not just in effort level but in terms of showing more bravery and quality on the ball as well.”
