Held at Roker Park, Sunderland welcomed Chelsea for an FA Cup replay that certainly lived up to its billing.

Peter Davenport gave the Black Cats, who were in the old Division Two at the time, the lead after just 20 minutes.

Chelsea inevitably came on strong, but the Lads defended resolutely until Dennis Wise equalised to silence Roker Park with just six minutes left.

However, the stadium was rocking just moments later when Gordan Armstong’s bullet header off Brian Atkinson’s corner sent Sunderland through.
