Manager's view: Parkinson on O'Brien signing

Phil Parkinson believes the versatility of Aiden O’Brien in forward areas could prove decisive ahead of the 2020-21 Sky Bet League One campaign.

The Republic of Ireland international put pen to paper on a two-year deal at the Stadium of Light on Wednesday, to become Parkinson’s first signing of the summer.

And the manager insists his acquisition can be a huge boost going into the new season.

“We’re really pleased with the signing of Aiden,” Parkinson said.

“He’s a good age, he’s been promoted from League One before and he has experience playing Championship football.

“Aiden can play in a variety of attacking roles for us and that’s something I think is important, and we’re really looking forward to working with him.”

He continued: “He’s good at making runs in behind and stretching the opposition, and I think that’s something the squad needed.

“His hunger and desire to come and join us was key for me.

“I want players to come here for the right reasons and get ready to fight tooth and nail to help us have a great season.

“He has a real eagerness to be part of this club and he can't wait to get started."
