Bailey Wright has admitted Phil Parkinson’s vision for Sunderland was enough to confirm in his mind that a move to the north east was the right decision.

The Australian defender became the Black Cats’ second signing of January on Tuesday morning, joining the Lads until the end of the 2019-20 season from Championship outfit Bristol City.

With a wealth of experience in English football, after seven years at Preston North End and three years at Ashton Gate, Wright has earned over 100 Championship appearances.

Speaking to safc.com in his first interview, the 27-year-old confessed his mind was made up after conversations with Parkinson.

“It’s exciting to be here,” he said.

“From the drive here to walking through the doors, you can really see how big this club is.

“I am delighted to be here, and I am looking forward to getting out there and getting to work.

“Throughout my career I have had many experiences and hopefully they will stand me in good stead here.

“I am keen to kick on and keep improving in my career – this will be a great chance for me to do that.”

He continued: “What that manager is building here excites me and it’s something I want to be a part of.

“People in the area live and breathe football. For me, that will be amazing to play in front of every week.

“I want to be part of a successful Sunderland team.”
