Team news: Lafferty in contention to make debut

Phil Parkinson has confirmed new signing Kyle Lafferty will be included in Sunderland’s squad to face Milton Keynes Dons on Saturday.

The Northern Ireland striker became the Black Cats’ first new face of the January window when he penned a deal until the end of the season last week.

Following a full week’s training at the Academy of Light, Lafferty will go into this weekend’s match squad despite not playing a competitive game since the start of December.

Speaking at today’s press conference, Parkinson also revealed the latest on defender Tom Flanagan after he came off at half time in last weekend’s win over Wycombe Wanderers.

“Kyle Lafferty is in the squad for the weekend,” he said.

“I want him to get in and around the boys and so far, he has fitted in really well.

“He has trained well, and we are pleased with him but he has got a right challenge on his hands.

“He has got to get right up to speed but he won’t take long.”

He continued: “Tom Flanagan had a scan but that has come back clear and he has joined in all of training today which is good news for us.

“Apart from that there is nothing fresh from the weekend.”
