Manager: Parkinson delighted with contribution of strikers

Phil Parkinson has been delighted with the impact of Sunderland’s forwards so far in pre-season.

Will Grigg and Chris Maguire opened their accounts in Saturday’s win over Gateshead, while Charlie Wyke bagged a brace and Maguire added another against Carlisle United yesterday.

Speaking after the Black Cats’ win over the Cumbrians, Parkinson revealed the importance of finding the net in pre-season.

“To score three goals again is great for our front players,” Parkinson said.

“It’s so important in pre-season that the strikers find the back of the net.”

He continued: “Will Grigg got one on Saturday, Chris has now got two and Charlie bagged a brace.

“I thought Charlie was a little bit static on Saturday, but today, he was outstanding when he got on.

“He held the ball up well, he ran the channels and got his reward with two really good goals.

“It’s good when strikers get those type of finishes."
