preview: Gateshead vs Sunderland

Sunderland’s pre-season campaign begins today as they take on Gateshead FC at the International Stadium, kick-off 3pm.

Phil Parkinson’s side have been back in training for three weeks now, and travel to the National League side for their first competitive game in over five months due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Summer signings Aiden O’Brien and Bailey Wright are both in contention, while academy products Brandon Taylor, Jake Hackett, Dan Neil and Anthony Patterson could all feature.

Lynden Gooch returns to the club he spent six-months on loan at back in 2015, and Jack Diamond could also play a part after returning to Wearside following the conclusion of his loan with Harrogate Town.

Morgan Feeney is available for selection after signing for the Lads yesterday, while stopper Remi Matthews will just miss out after also penning a deal at the Stadium of Light.

Gateshead did not have any time to dwell on their play-off disappointment and were back in pre-season action on Tuesday, when they drew 1-1 with Carlisle United.

Mike Williamson’s squad included eight trialists and it is likely to do so once again tomorrow, as the Black Cats take on unfamiliar opposition.
