Jack Ross believes lessons must be learned quickly as Sunderland's wait for their first clean sheet of the season continued this evening against Rotherham United.

Both sides went at it hammer and tong at the Stadium of Light as Marc McNulty’s early goal was cancelled out by Jake Hastie’s second-half strike.

Aiden McGeady had missed the chance to double the Black Cats’ advantage in the opening period as Daniel Iversen saved his spot kick after Lynden Gooch was fouled.

The result leaves Sunderland fourth ahead of Saturday’s trip to Bolton Wanderers.

"It was a tough game against a good side," he said.

"We had opportunities to go further ahead throughout the course of the game but the biggest lesson for us is that collectively we need to start keeping clean sheets.

"Ultimately, it's my responsibility as manager and we need to do so because we are 10 games into the season.

"To not have kept one yet makes it not easy to keep winning games so that's the biggest frustration tonight," he continued.

"I need to get better at it and we need to as a team."
