Player in focus: Laurens De Bock

Sunderland completed their seventh signing of the summer yesterday when they welcomed Leeds United left-back Laurens De Bock to the Stadium of Light on a season-long loan.

The full back comes into Jack Ross’ squad to push youngster Denver Hume and add much-needed competition to that area of the pitch.

Here is a quick look at his career so far...

De Bock started his career at Belgian side Lokeren, making his debut during the 2009-10 season and making just five appearances at age 17.

After breaking into the team, he became one of the first names on the team sheet for a Lokeren team that lifted the Belgian Cup in 2012.

A move followed in January 2013 to Belgian giants Club Brugge for a fee of €3.5 million and he continued to build his reputation there.

He featured regularly for the Belgian under-21s side during this time but fell short of earning a call up to the senior squad.

The 2013-14 campaign saw De Bock play 36 games in all competitions and the full-back played two games in the Europa League that season.

Brugge enjoyed a successful 2014-15 season and De Bock was integral to their success playing 54 games in all competitions, featuring 13 times in Europe and winning the Belgian Cup again defeating Anderlecht 2-1.

The following season was even more successful for Brugge as they won the Belgian title and defeated Standard Liege 2-1 to win the Belgian Super Cup.

De Bock played 44 times in the title winning season and became a fan favourite because of his consistent performances at the Jan Breydel Stadium.

Those performances earned the left-back a move to Leeds United in the January of 2018, but he was the victim of manager changes and was frozen out of the team almost from the get-go at Elland Road.

A loan move followed last season at K.V. Oostende in his native Belgium and he featured regularly for the team throughout the season.

This summer it became clear that De Bock would be down the pecking order at Championship promotion favourites Leeds so he sought a move elsewhere to get some playing time.
