Phil Parkinson wants to produce a Sunderland team that fans can be proud of.
The Black Cats will be backed by a close to sold out away end when they travel to Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday.
Chasing three vital points in the hunt to climb League One, the 51-year-old is no stranger to north east expectations and passion having attended Roker Park as a kid.
Speaking to the media just hours after being unveiled as manager, Parkinson highlighted the power such support can bring but knows every ounce of respect must be earned.
"I think myself and the players have got to expect that and prepare to deal with it,” he said.
"That is the expectations of being at a club the size and the stature of Sunderland. We have got to use the supporters to our advantage.
"They travel away in numbers and the attendances are fantastic at home games. We have got to use that to inspire us.
"Ultimately, we have got to send the supporters home and into work on Monday with three points they can be proud of,” he continued.
"We have got no divine right to win games and we know we have to earn every single point along the way."
