Manager's view: Parkinson feeling positive ahead of Shrews trip

Phil Parkinson is focused on masterminding another attack minded display at Shrewsbury Town this weekend.

Sunderland travel to New Meadow on Saturday in search of building on from Tuesday’s 5-0 win over Tranmere Rovers.

The Black Cats were ruthless throughout in Parkinson’s first home match in charge as they recorded their biggest home win in 21 years.

But with a trip to Shrewsbury Town now on the horizon, the 51-year-old has admitted his players must keep their foot firmly on the throttle if they are to take the game to the opposition like they did on Tuesday.

“It was a terrific win for us, very quickly in football your mind turns to the next game and it is about reproducing that performance level,” he said.

“We have to make sure the lads have the energy in their legs to do it, that we get the team selection right, and then can we produce the same performance and standard of play and if we do then we have a good chance of winning the game.”

“It is always a big factor whenever we come to town,” he continued.

“On Saturday, we will have a big away following behind us and we have got to go and play like the home team.

“I really do believe that we have got to use the supporters who spend their hard-earned cash to come and watch us play.

“We have got to play with that front-foot mentality we showed the other night. If we do, then we will have a good chance at the weekend.

“Shrewsbury will be pleased so far this season. They usually set-up in a 3-5-2 formation, they are a hard-working side and we have got to match that.

“I expect us to and then it’s about exploiting them in areas and up to us to play as positively as we did the other night.”
