Team news: Parkinson reveals Watmore doubt

Duncan Watmore is a doubt for the weekend after missing Tuesday’s trip to Oxford United with a virus.

The winger, who has scored in each of Sunderland’s last two home matches in all competitions, has made a big impact since Phil Parkinson’s arrival in October.

Scorer of the Black Cats’ first goal last time out at the Stadium of Light, Watmore turned provider for the next two as he won the free-kick which Chris Maguire netted and then teed-up Lynden Gooch for a close-range finish shortly after.

However, the 25-year-old has been cast as a doubt for the weekend after picking up an illness which forced him to miss Sunderland's Carabao Cup trip to Oxford.

Elsewhere, Joel Lynch is fit and available for the weekend after picking up a knock at the Kassam Stadium on Tuesday while Gooch, Charlie Wyke and Lee Burge remain out.

Speaking at today’s media conference, Parkinson provided the latest from the treatment room.

“Joel Lynch is fine after he got a bang on the knee,” he said.

“He stayed in the treatment room yesterday but has been out on the grass today and trained with us.

“Lynden (Gooch) still isn’t out on the grass, but Charlie (Wyke) is hopefully going to start running next week.

“Lee (Burge) still has a problem with his thigh, it’s not a serious injury but it’s not progressed as quickly as we had hoped.”

He continued: “Duncan (Watmore) has had a virus this week and we are going to have to assess him carefully because it can reduce your energy levels.

“He has trained some of this morning, but we are going to look at him and decide what we want to do.”
