Team news: Burge and Hume back in contention

Assistant manager Steve Parkin has revealed there are no fresh injury concerns ahead of Tuesday’s trip to Scunthorpe United.

Sunderland travel to Glanford Park for their final group game knowing only a win will be enough to secure their pathway through to the knockout stages.

However, with Jon McLaughlin, Tom Flanagan and Conor McLaughlin away on international duty changes are likely.

Boss Phil Parkinson will be boosted by the return to Lee Burge and Denver Hume, and he might also be keen to use the opportunity to look at a number of the under-23s.

“Burgey is back and feeling okay,” Parkin told the media at today’s press conference.

“Denver is feeling okay and trained this morning, and there are no real injury concerns from the weekend.

“There’s a couple of slight knocks, but nothing serious.”

He continued: “Anthony Patterson will be travelling with us. We were delighted that he played well on Sunday and since he has started training with the first team he has been terrific.

“He looks as though he is a good young keeper.

“We haven’t exactly decided on the squad for tomorrow evening but there will probably be three or four under-23s travelling who played yesterday.”
