Team news: Trio to miss Gillingham trip

Sunderland will be without 10 first-team players for Tuesday’s Emirates FA Cup replay at Gillingham on Tuesday.

Joel Lynch, Jordan Willis and George Dobson have been ruled out as four players remain on international duty.

Elliot Embleton, Charlie Wyke and Lynden Gooch continue to be absent, but Will Grigg has recovered from illness and has successfully come through the last few training sessions.

Speaking at today’s press conference, Phil Parkinson provided an update on Sunderland's injury list before revealing that a host of under-23 players will travel to Priestfield Stadium tomorrow evening.

“Lynch has had an injection in his back and Willis had an injection in his knee so neither will make it,” he said.

“We’re going to rest George because he has an ongoing problem as well but should be ok for the weekend.

“We have four on international duty so when you add that to Wyke and Goochie, it means the youngsters are going to get the chance to come on the trip tomorrow.

“We are taking seven or eight of the youngsters down with us and defensively we are obviously short on bodies.

“The likes of Brandon Taylor and Jack Bainbridge are included, and I am looking forward to seeing them tomorrow,” he continued.

“Will Grigg is back available. He had a sickness bug last week but has come back in and trained the last couple of days.

“Will is an important player for us. We have got to keep working with and we all know there is more to come from him.”
