Team news: Hume doubtful with virus

Phil Parkinson has revealed Denver Hume is a doubt for this weekend’s round one Emirates FA Cup tie against Gillingham.

Hume, who impressed in his last performance against Southend United, has been suffering with a virus over the last few days and is likely to miss Saturday’s tie at the Stadium of Light.

However, the Sunderland manager has confirmed Lee Burge is back in training and could return to this weekend’s matchday squad.

Parkinson also offered a full update from the treatment room, with Lynden Gooch back running on the grass.

“Denver Hume has got a virus, so he is a doubt,” he told the media at Friday’s press conference.

“We will just have to wait and see how he is. It is similar to what Duncan had and we will just see how he is closer to kick-off.”

He continued: “Lynden has been out running today so touch wood that’s him making progress.

“Charlie has made good progress over the last couple of days. The swelling on has gone out on his ankle and Brandy is a lot happier.

“Hopefully we are going to get him going next week in terms of out on the grass running.

“Embo is another three months away so that’s a long-term injury.

“Burge has trained some of the week and we will assess him tomorrow and see how he is.

“He felt it a little bit at the end of the session today so we will make a decision whether to put him in the squad tomorrow.”
