The Black Cats fell to a 1-0 defeat at Scunthorpe United after Luke O’Nien was dismissed for a foul on Abo Eisa.
Lee Novak converted the resultant penalty in the second 45 before later grabbing his second after Eisa had turned home a corner to seal Sunderland’s fate in this season’s EFL Trophy.
