Injury blow: Watmore ruled out for 8-12 weeks

Duncan Watmore is likely to miss the remainder of the season, according to manager Jack Ross.

The 25-year-old, who netted Sunderland’s injury-time leveller at Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday, limped off following a heavy challenge from Marcus Bean.

While the midfielder was shown a second-yellow card for the foul, the result of it is that Watmore has now been ruled out for eight to 12 weeks with an ankle ligaments injury.

Speaking post-match at Barnsley, Ross provided a full update on the winger.

“The likelihood is that Duncan will miss the rest of the season,” he said.

“It is incredibly disappointing for him because of what he has been through. The positive thing is that it’s nothing to do with his knee. His knee is in great shape and has been for a while now so that’s a confidence boost for him.

“It’s a sore one for him and I mean that in both senses, both physically and mentally. He’s been making a contribution for us and I’ve been delighted with him.

“I said at the time I was disappointed with the tackle and I think you can see the outcome of that because he is looking at eight to 12 weeks out.

“It’s frustrating for us but more so for him. Hopefully, he will be ready before the end of the season but if not then definitely for pre-season.”
