Matchday uncovered: Talking points from Saturday's win over Walsall

safc.com look back on Saturday’s matchday at the Stadium of Light as Sunderland closed the gap on the top two in Sky Bet League One.

19 GAMES AND COUNTING

Momentum is key at this stage of the season and Sunderland have certainly built that. Their latest win has stretched their unbeaten run to 19 games in all competitions – a run which has seen them win 10 and draw nine games while also advancing into the Checkatrade Trophy Final. After a run of just two wins in seven matches, Jack Ross’ side have ploughed on in recent weeks, drawing just two of their last seven as they’ve taken 15 points from 21.

23 ON THE TROT

After going almost a year without recording a win on home turf, the turnaround has been remarkable as the Black Cats have now scored in every home league game during the last 12 months. Standing at 23 matches, the Black Cats are also unbeaten on home turf since April 2018.

GOAL X3

Lee Cattermole has been in red hot form recently at the Stadium of Light, scoring in each of his last three appearances. Netting his first on home soil since joining the club in 2009 against Gillingham in a 4-2 win, Cattermole has then followed it up with strikes in wins against Plymouth Argyle and Walsall to take his tally to six goals for the season.

THE BEAUTY OF SOCIAL MEDIA

Away from the on the pitch action, the club strengthened their connection with some friends up the road. What started out as just a tweet on Non-League Day in 2018 in support of fellow clubs who use the hashtag #SAFC, saw us welcome Scottish club Saint Anthony’s to the Stadium of Light…

ONE SOAKED FLAG-BEARER

A huge shout out must go to one of our flag-bearers at the Stadium of Light on Saturday. In what was a rather unfortunate place to stand/timing, the poor lad got soaked as a sprinkler shot up out of the turf and drenched him. That said, he remained true to his task and continued to wave his flag as the two teams exited the tunnel.

We salute you!
