Elliot Embleton can’t wait for the 2019-20 season to start after penning a new two-year contract at Sunderland.

The midfielder secured the deal on Tuesday afternoon before jetting off with the Black Cats first team for their pre-season tour of Portugal, in association with UK Asbestos Specialists Limited.

Embleton, who enjoyed a productive loan at League Two club Grimsby Town last term, is now back in red and white vying for a starting place in Jack Ross’ thoughts come August 3.

Having been involved in both friendlies against South Shields and Benfica B, the 20-year-old has told safc.com that he’s enjoying the trials and tribulations of pre-season as competition heats up in the Algarve sun.

“I’m very happy to secure my future to the club,” he said.

“It dragged on for a while but now I’ve got it sorted I can concentrate on my football and getting into the team.

“I went on loan to Grimsby and had a very good time there last season. I played 30 games and scored four times and assisted four as well.

“It was a great experience because we went quite far in the FA Cup too and I got the chance to play against some Premier League sides, so I feel quite confident coming back into the set-up here.

He continued: “I’ve spoken to the manager over the summer and he’s told me I’m going to be in and around the first-team squad here.

“Hopefully I can show him what I can do and get in the side.”
