Charlie Wyke marked his first league start at the Stadium of Light since September with a goal as Sunderland claimed a point at home to Blackpool today.

The towering striker offered a physical and robust presence to the Black Cats’ attacking line, and he was at the heart of everything that was good about Phil Parkinson’s side this afternoon.

Wyke clinically volleyed home Chris Maguire’s corner on 37 minutes after Matty Virtue had opened the scoring with a fine strike early on.

But while the 27-year-old’s effort earned Sunderland a point, he was left rueing a huge chance as the woodwork denied his second-half header.
