Grant Leadbitter has admitted he is extremely honoured to be named Sunderland’s new club captain.

The midfielder, who rose through the youth ranks on Wearside, has succeeded George Honeyman as the new skipper following his departure to Hull City last week.

Leadbitter, 34, re-joined the Black Cats in January 2019 from Middlesbrough, and has since cemented his place in the dressing room as he looks to help rebuild the club on and off the field.

Speaking to safc.com about the news of him being given the captaincy, Leadbitter admitted he hopes to leave his mark but has called for togetherness throughout the campaign as Sunderland look to go one step better than last season and achieve their goal of promotion.

“It’s obviously a proud moment for myself,” he said.

“It won’t change me as a person or as a player because I will always do what I’ve done throughout my career.

“To be named captain of Sunderland is quite special for me.

“As a youngster I aspired to play football for Sunderland Football Club.

“To become captain now is great, it really is. Dreams are dreams and to fulfil them are good.

“I don’t just want to be captain of this football club; I want to be a successful captain.

“The only way that can be achieved is by having a good group of players, staff and fans because we are all in it together.

“The role of captain is no more important than any player in the dressing room,” he continued.

“I’m no more important than anyone. At previous clubs I’ve tried to be the same and it’s worked.

“I believe if we have a good core of players in the dressing room who are on the same page then you will have a strong season.”
