Team news: McGeouch out of Sky Blues clash

Sunderland will be without midfielder Dylan McGeouch for Saturday’s home match with Coventry City, according to assistant manager James Fowler.

Following a string of eye-catching displays in the middle of the park at Accrington Stanley and Rochdale, the Scotsman was forced off with a muscular injury to his abdomen in Tuesday’s stalemate with Burton Albion.

Speaking at the club’s pre-Coventry City press conference, Fowler provided an update on the Glaswegian before revealing the latest on midfielder Chris Maguire, who returned to training at the Academy of Light today.

“Injuries are largely much the same as they were,” he said.

“One or two have been back in doing light training today, but Dylan McGeouch has got a strain from Tuesday night and will miss the weekend.

“Chris Maguire trained today,” he continued. “That’s the first time he’s been back on the training pitch. We’re glad to see him back, but he’s still a little short of fitness and match sharpness.

“We’ll see how he’s feeling today and tomorrow after training. He’s been out a while and once you come back in within the group you see where you are match sharpness wise. We’re working with him to get him back as quickly as we can.

“Aiden McGeady and Lee Cattermole are still injury doubts as well. Still got niggles and will be assessed over the next 24 hours to see how they are for Saturday.”
